Completed in 2001 and first published as a short story in The Next Wave: The Gay Times Book of Short Stories, January 2002, the story was always intended to be a feature film and the script was optioned in 2003 but never produced. FROM THE INTRODUCTION: "Growing up in Sheffield I was mesmerised by the moving image, both film TV, and always wanted to be a part of it. Initially I wanted to be a stunt man but realising I had no athletic ability whatsoever, decided that an actor would have to suffice and it would at least be much safer. With that in mind, I did GCSE Drama and then a course at college in performing arts, and became increasingly interested in the behind the scenes aspects of what it takes to mount a production. It’s during this time I started writing scripts with the eventual intention that I would direct them and G-A-Y was the second feature length screenplay I wrote. The first draft was completed in late 2000/early 2001 but I had been developing it on and off for a couple of years before that. My main motivations for wanting to tell the story was that whilst growing up I’d never really seen positive images of young gay people having fun and celebrating their lives on either the TV or in films, if you did see gay storylines they tended to paint the picture of either the predatory or miserable homosexual male, and I wanted to challenge that. It was a cathartic experience to write the script and is based directly on the situation I found myself in with my boyfriend at the time. I’d just moved to Manchester to study and, although I thought I was doing the right thing for us, my boyfriend and my first true love, felt differently and on his insistence we broke up. Looking back, it was the right thing to do but at the time I was broken hearted and inconsolable. So to take my mind of it I wrote and this screenplay was the result. It was at this point, and after seeing an ad at my local LGBT youth group about a new book of short stories to be published by Gay Times Magazine, that I adapted it into a short story. To my pleasant surprise it was accepted and was published as part of The Next Wave: The Gay Times Book of Short Stories in 2002. I considered adapting it to a novel around that time, not that I had my foot in the door as published writer but, as I always envisioned the story as a film, I never got around to it. I also wrote a couple of short film scripts at this point too which were both produced and toured the festival circuit. The script itself was optioned in 2003 by a London-based independent production company but never produced. Why not? Who knows? By that point we’d already had Queer As Folk and perhaps it was no longer as important to tell the story because the landscape of positive images of gay people in the media was changing. Since then I’ve thought about updating and revamping for a new audience but it seems wrong to do so as it’s a document of and for its time.
